Flowers

I am thinking that the bridesmaid bouquets will each be a single type of red flower (one will have all tulips, one will have all roses, etc.), the my bouquet will be a combination of all of those flowers- all in red. I love the look of monochromatic bouquets created with a variety of flower types- there is such a cool texture.

I am going to meet with a florist while I'm in NY for Thanksgiving.. hopefully this is all do-able...

Bye Bud.

When I was around 6 I started to want a cat of my own so bad. My parents told me that when our current cat (who was getting pretty old) died, I could have a kitten of my own. After a couple of years of this, with Cinder not slowing down, my parents decided to get me a kitten. For Christmas when I was in third grade, I got one. She was so little and orange and white, so I named her Butterscotch, which eventually got shortened to Bud.

Bud was the perfect cat for me- she loved to just cuddle and purr. Bud would always try to get under the blankets at night time (which was AWESOME in the winter when I needed a little extra warmth). Bud could read my moods and whenever she heard me crying, or just heard my voice upset, she would come running and get as close to me as possible, on my lap or rubbing my legs.

One of the worst things about going away to school and then moving here to Maryland, was leaving my kitties. I felt like I was abandoning them and that they wouldn't understand why I just left them all of a sudden. I always hoped to bring Bud with me whenever I moved out, but by last year when I did, she was just too old to make the car or plane ride. She would be confused as to where she was and she would just plain miss the other kitties.

This past summer, she got grouchier and grumpier, and eventually in the last couple of months, she stopped getting out of bed and was having various health issues. Today, my parents decided it was the right time for her to be put to sleep.

I hate that I wasn't there to say goodbye and that the last I saw her, she wasn't really sick at all- it makes me feel like she was put to sleep while nothing was wrong with her. Of course I know my parents wouldn't do that and she must have not been well at all, but I still feel like I abandoned her. I had a terrible day at work and I just want to crawl into my bed. :(

Bridesmaid Notecards

In addition to the jewelry that I posted about a couple of days ago, the bridesmaid gifts will also include handmade custom notecards, an awesome re-useable grocery bag, a red pashmina, some little bath type things and something else that is still to be determined.

To make the notecards, I ordered precut and folded, recycled cards and envelopes from Paper-Source, my new best friend.

Next I created a design representative of each girl and printed it and then Gocco'd it onto the notecard in a color I knew they would like.

After Gocco'ing the notecard, I Gocco'd the back of the envelope with a bit of whatever design was on the card.

Lastly, I tied the cards and envelopes together with a perdy ribbon.

Done and done. Except I'm not. I still haven't gotten something good for Amanda. Hmmmm..

Bridesmaid Jewelry

Originally I told myself that I couldn't care less what the bridesmaids wore- I was even just going to tell them to pick a long dress in brown. Eventually I thought about it and decided that I would feel overwhelmed if told that, so I picked a dress for the girls. Jewelry I especially didn't care about. However, when I found this:

I knew I had to incorporate it somehow. But, for $30 each, I couldn't buy them. After a bit of research, I decided I could make them myself. I ordered a bunch of supplies from Fire Mountain and eventually worked up enough courage to just do it.

After a bunch of trial & errors, this is what I came up with:

The necklace.

Earring.

The earrings- a little less blurry this time.

After making the jewelry, I packaged them in boxes that I got from Fire Mountain. They look pretty professional, if I do say so myself.

The briolettes (the tear-drop shapes) are red to obviously coordinate with the colors of the wedding. I made a pair of the earrings for myself, though I won't be wearing one of the necklaces. I will wear my pearl necklace that my grandma has been building for me for as long as I can remember. In order to incorporate and reference my necklace, I included pearls on the bridesmaid necklaces and the earrings.

I think that the drop style of the necklace will work well with the bridesmaid dresses and am excited to gift the maids with these.

In the (hopefully) near future, I will be creating myself a hair piece that will coordinate with the necklaces and earrings. I will also be making Amanda (my maid of honor) a cute little pin that will look nice on her dress and match my hair piece and will serve to distinguish her as the maid of honor.

Giving Away STD's!

..Save the dates that is. John thinks its hilarious to call them STDs.

We wanted to do save the dates since John's family and most of our friends are from out of town. We needed a way to get people the information regarding the hotel blocks and the timing of the events. I created a website that has timing, the hotel blocks, activities to do in the area, driving directions and information about flying, etc. To get this information out, I designed a save the date. (These also served as a bit of an engagement announcement since I'm sure most of my family hadn't even known I was engaged prior to receiving the STD.)

First, some inspiration:

I have no idea where I got most of these from- sorry :(

I love these photostrip save the dates!

For my save the dates, I decided to do a booklet style. The outside is kraft paper (receycled!). I wanted to use as many recycled paper items as possible, since we are using so much paper. Kraft will show up in several places throughout the wedding stationary- it adds a nice touch of brown too!

Inside of the booklet is a magnet with our date. Underneath the magnet guests found a note letting them know that the actual invitation will follow, along with our website containing all of the important stuff.

How did we make them?
After I designed the magnets, I set up as many as possible on an 8.5x11 sheet and then made them a PDF so that John could print them (he doesn't have Adobe InDesign on his computer).

I bought 8.5x11 magnetic paper (from Paper Source) which John fed through the printer and then I cut them with my craft rotary paper cutter.

We ended up with around 70 of these:

As you can see, the color came out really nice, which I wasn't really expecting. Yay!

The next step was cutting the kraft paper for the outside of the booklets. I designed the STDs so that I would get two booklets/8.5x11 sheet, and they would fit into an A2 envelope (4x5 I think). I designed the inside in Adobe InDesign (just like the magnets) and the John printed those as well.

After that, all I had to do was cut the kraft paper in half length-wise and fold it in half:

After I cut the booklet covers, John stamped them with a custom s&j stamp and some red ink.

After all of the booklets were stamped, John used adhesive plastic corners to place the magnet over the text on the inside of the book.

Lastly, I tied the booklet up with a red ribbon:

We put the STDs in a little kraft envelope, put on a custom wraparound label that I designed and printed on 8.5x11 label sheets and applied the awesome new Eames stamps.

I don't have any pictures of the envelopes all did up, but here is a picture of the wraparound label- the s&j return address is on the back (sealing) side of the envelope and the "please deliver to" is on the front left.

Boo all of the blurries. :(

From what we have heard, they have been received well. The only issue with them has been that people didn't realize there was a magnet on the inside (thus, they didn't see the information which was the reason to send them out!). I'm not sure WHY people didn't realize this- the magnet made the STD heavy in that spot, the magnet is a completely different paper/texture/thickness than the kraft paper, and there are those clear plastic corners on the booklet.

Oh well. We have been trying to spread the word when we can.

Dress Shopping - Part II

After the first round of venue searching, my mom and I headed to a discount bridal shop in the area. We got to the store (eventually- talk about making it hard to find an entrance!) and I told the ladies a specific dress that I had my eye on (for awhile)- Casablanca 1831:

Casablanca 1831

The ladies pulled the dress out for me and I tried it on. I loved it. It was flattering and simple.
Looking at these pictures though, I am GLAD I didn't choose this dress- the back is not so hot on me.

The next dress I didn't really want to try on, but they asked me to since it was similar to the 1831. I agreed, and am lucky that I did. It ended up being my dress! I never felt an "angels singing" moment, but I didn't really expect to. I loved the dress, it was comfortable, everything I was looking for and I didn't want to try on dresses anymore.

John don't look! I will fight you!

I got the Casablanca 1908.

And here she is on me:

The front- sparklies and a wrap top with a dropped waist. The dress is ivory with blush pink accents. The torso area is pleated with the ivory and pink (which is very muted). This dress was a size too small for me, so its a little rough looking.

The back is pretty awesome- very Cinderella-y. I think it will look sweet with e french/under bustle.

I was never a fan of pick-ups (the gathered areas), but this dress has so few that I don't end up looking like a cupcake:

Oh- yeah- we are DEFINITELY crossing the straps in the back. Suh-weet.

I knew I was on a short timeline for the whole dress ordering thing. I had less than 5 months (which I think is about the amount of time it takes on average to get a dress ordered). Yikes. Casablanca makes the dresses as the orders come in, so that adds a little extra time to the order, not leaving very much time at all for shipping or alterations.

Since the dresses are made to order, I had the option of paying something like $30 more and having them make the dress to my exact measurements. We did this, and if all goes well, I won't NEED alterations.

Right now, the dress is scheduled to ship the week before Christmas. Yes, a couple of weeks before the wedding. I have a plane ticket to go to NY the Saturday after Christmas to try it on, get any necessary alterations and a bustle. Hopefully it doesn't get lost in the mail!

Reception Site?

On our trip home to NY, John and I looked at reception sites with my mom. Reception sites make me nervous since so many have the hotel/ballroom look- busy carpet patterns, awkward wall colors/wallpaper, etc. The goal was to find something cheap, and relatively simple looking.

Our first stop was Eagle Crest Country Club.

The event manager was not in while we were there, but we were able to meet the chef. He also let us into the reception space to look around. It was really pretty, laid out nice and had good prices. I did not like that the main entrance was a bit hard to find, and the chairs were a little unattractive. Also, one of my cousins was married there a couple of years ago- not a big deal, but it would be nice to give family another experience. The biggest con though, was that it is about 45 minutes or so away from the church- which wouldn't ordinarily be a big deal, BUT many people will be coming from Maryland and down here, a tiny bit of snow gets them worked up about driving. I cannot even estimate how much or little snow there will be in Upstate NY in January.

Next stop was the Elks lodge where my mom's friend is the event coordinator. I was a bit nervous going into this (for obvious reasons), but their prices were awesome.. and it was nice that my mom's friend would be out coordinator- I knew we could depend on her. The coordinator's mom who was a chef for years, and taught cooking at a local college, does the cooking for the lodge events, so that was also reassuring.

But, once we saw the place- it was what we feared. We didn't want the wedding to LOOK like we were trying to save money, though we were. There were acoustic ceiling tiles (some popping out), a BINGO sign that did have a screen, vinyl tile floors (in mauve and teal) and it just had the atmosphere of a school gym or cafeteria.

After a brief intermission (for dress shopping!) John and I went to the Carousel Ballrooms at Sterup Square. My mom had already visited here and been in contact with the coordinator. I had seen pictures online, but John hadn't and we just wanted to see it in person. When we got there, someone grabbed the chef for us (even though he was in the middle of prepping for a banquet!) and he walked us through the space, gave us some details, and answered any questions. He was so accomodating- a bit cocky, but he really knew what he was talking about and had a huge attention to detail. After meeting with him, John and I pretty much decided right there, this is where our reception would be.

The first space is a glass room with a bar and cocktail tables. This is where the cocktail hour will take place. The center of the room (where there is a "dance floor" gets set up with a table holding cheeses, veggies, crackers, bread, etc. There are tables and chairs placed around for those who don't want to stand for the hour. Sterup Square has golden mosaic candle holders that we can (and will) use for the tables in this space. I'm also pretty sure that Sterup Square has replaced the chairs in this room since the picture was taken. (Another thing that was awesome about the chef- he is continually trying to update and refresh the space- by our reception, he will have new trees with white lights for the space!)

The second space is the actual ballroom. This picture makes it look a bit more gaudy than I actually like. It is very GOLD. We are going to tone that down with a bunch of red and brown accents. Also, with people in the space, I don't think it will be SO gold. The table linens are ivory napkins on ivory table cloths. We are going to rent red chair sashes that will become table runners. With those, the centerpieces, favors and menus on the tables, the whole look should be less gold.

The far end of the space is where the DJ sets up, and where I assume the cake table will be. There is space outside of the glass room for the guest book table, as well as the table card table. The bathrooms have all been updated and renovated recently. There is a coat closet and a bridal party room. I'm pretty sure they had all of the bases covered. Done and done.

..and I don't think that carousel horse is ACTUALLY in the space.. I hope.

Photography

Keira Lemonis Photography

Two weeks after getting engaged, John and I went to NY to take care of a bunch of the big wedding things.

First stop- finding a photographer. We didn't even have a reception site yet (though my mom had been doing some scouting for us), but photography is something that is super important to me. I lined up appointments with two photographers for that weekend.

First we met with Keira Lemonis. I saw her work online (after finding her through Craigslist!) and I loved it. Her work is very photojournalistic, while still maintaining the traditional shots. In addition to the awesome pictures, her prices cannot be beat.

After meeting with Keira and getting a bunch of questions answered, we both didn't see a need to meet with the other photographers. Keira is going to be awesome to work with, from what I can tell.

Some of Keira's work:
